Which tiger is your favourite, a cute tiger or a cool tiger? The results of the ‘General Tiger Election’ are announced!

The tiger is a wild animal that is popularly used as a motif in art. In Japan, the white tiger in the mural paintings of the Takamatsuzuka kofun (髙松塚古墳) and other paintings depicting fortune on the battle field and power have been favoured by warlords and feudal lords.

We are focusing in on these tiger paintings and have held a popularity contest on the Waraku web Instagram, where we received a lot of votes and comments! We've published this article for you so you can see the results for yourself!

Mokozu (猛虎図), Hijikata Torei, colour on silk, Edo period, dated 1803, Kyushu National Museum Source: ColBase (https://colbase.nich.go.jp)

Cute and looks more like a pussycat than a tiger!

Fourth place
Keisai Eisen, ‘Tsuki ni tora’ (月に虎, Tiger and the full moon)

‘Tsuki ni tora (月に虎)’, Keisai Eisen (渓斎英泉), Large short-form brocade print, Edo period, 19th century, Tokyo National Museum Source: ColBase (https://colbase.nich.go.jp)

A fiercely bold, but somewhat melancholy expression which pulls at the heartstrings…

Third place
Yuhi, Tora zu (虎図, Tiger)

‘Tora Zu (虎図)’ Yuhi (熊斐), Edo period, Houreki 12 (1762), Kyushu National Museum Source: ColBase (https://colbase.nich.go.jp)

Its fluffy fur and mischievous expression is so charming!

Second place
Maruyama Okyo, Torazu (虎図, Tiger)

‘Torazu (虎図)’, Ink on paper by Maruyama Okyo (円山応挙), Edo period, dated 1765 (Meiwa 2), Tokyo National Museum Source: ColBase (https://colbase.nich.go.jp)

The black and white gives it a Manga feel.

First Prize
Maruyama Okyo, Kosho seifuzu

‘Kosho seifuzu (虎嘯生風図)’, Maruyama Okyo, Colouring on silk, Edo period, dated 1786, Tokyo National Museum Source: ColBase (https://colbase.nich.go.jp)

Its charm is that its seductive intense, yet has the most adorable hands!

The first prize went to Maruyama Okyo’s ‘Koshou seifuu-zu’ (虎嘯生風図, tiger’s roar, conjuring the wind). Thank you very much for your votes!

When put side by side, they have a variety of expressions and atmospheres, depending on the person who painted them, and even by the same artist!
Numerous artists have painted tigers, but in the Edo period it was impossible to see tigers in the flesh, as they were not native to Japan, and although there are records of them being shown at freak shows, none of them sketched the real thing. Most of them drew from Chinese paintings, furs and cats!

And many of you shared with us your favourite paintings of tigers when you voted! We’ve already closed the polls, but we’d love to hear your favourite tiger drawings in the comments section ♡
