    Swallows, which migrate to various parts of Japan with the arrival of spring, are, along with the Uguisu (ウグイス - Japanese bush warbler), birds that make us feel the arrival of the warmer seasons. However, they build their nests, raise their chicks, and take flight once again when autumn arrives.     Purification Before Prayer: The Linguistic roots and Rituals of the Japanese Temizusha
    When I visited a shrine the other day, I asked a Shinto priest how to pronounce Temizusha (手水舎), and they replied, ‘Temizusha’. I was quite surprised, as I had firmly believed it was pronounced ‘Chozuya’. The priest went on to explain, "The pronunciation actually varies depending on the shrine." It varies from place to place!? How rather mysterious. Therefore, I decided to look into the Temizusha myself!

    The Kyusu Teapot: Why Was the Side Handle Adopted, and Why the Curious Name?
    One early afternoon, whilst having a casual chat with my neighbours, the topic of kyusu teapots (急須) came up. "It seems some people nowadays don't even know what they are," someone noted. "Really? Then how do they make tea?" "Perhaps that culture is fading, and they just drink from plastic bottles?" "Y-you can't be serious!?" I realised that, despite bringing up the fact that the kanji characters for Kyusu was curious, I actually knew nothing about its etymology. So, I decided to do a bit of research on the subject!

    2025年に初演された山岸涼子の名作漫画を原作とした能 狂言『日出処（ひいづるところ）の天子』は、大きな注目を集めました。再演を望む声が多かったことから、2026年8月に東京・観世能楽堂での上演が決定。その再演に先立って、物語のなかのキ—パ—ソンとも言える難役に挑まれた能楽師の大槻文藏さんと大槻裕一さんに、お話を伺いました。

    ある日の昼下がり、ご近所の皆さんと他愛のない話をしていて、「急須」が話題に上がりました。「最近では、知らない人もいるみたいよ」「え、じゃあどうやってお茶を入れるの？」「そういう文化もなくなって、ペットボトルなんじゃない？」「ほ、本当に！？」

    「急須」って漢字も不思議だなと、話題にしておきながら、何の知識もないことに気がつきました。そこで、急須について、改めて調べてみました！

    猫は登場しない！？それとも…逸話が面白い「涅槃図」とは
    涅槃図（ねはんず）を見たことがありますか？ お釈迦様が入滅（にゅうめつ･亡くなること）した様子を描いた絵画で、「涅槃に入る（釈迦の死･悟りに入った境地）」ということから、涅槃図と呼ばれます。入滅した2月15日には、涅槃図を掲げて法要を行う涅槃会（ねはんえ）が、各地のお寺で行われます。見れば見るほど興味深い、涅槃図をご紹介します！

    In the Spotlight as a Filming Location for the Movie Kokuho: Exploring the Charm of Toyooka City’s Eirakukan
    The film Kokuho (National Treasure) has achieved an exceptionally long and successful run, reportedly leading to a continuous stream of repeat viewers. I myself have seen it twice, and after each viewing, I feel an addictive urge to watch it again. The scenes where the lead actors, Yoshizawa Ryo (吉沢亮) and Yokohama Ryusei (横浜流星), perform Kabuki (歌舞伎) in the roles of female characters (onnagata, 女方) were particularly breathtaking. Visiting the locations where these plays-within-the-movie were filmed is now a growing trend. I decided to visit the Izushi Eirakukan Theatre (出石永楽館) in Izushi Town, Toyooka (豊岡) City, Hyogo (兵庫) Prefecture, whose popularity has spread rapidly through word-of-mouth.

    What makes ‘Izushi Sara Soba’ so delicious? A Taste of Toyooka City’s Soba District
    While there are many famous soba (buckwheat noodle) restaurants across Japan, Izushi (出石) Town in Toyooka (豊岡) City, Hyogo (兵庫) Prefecture, is home to a unique area where approximately 40 soba establishments are clustered within walking distance. A taxi ride from JR Toyooka Station takes about 20 minutes to reach the location. According to the taxi driver, the soba is characteristically served on five small individual plates. Encouraged by the local consensus, "When in Izushi, you simply must try the Sara Soba (皿そば)," I set off with a map in hand to find an Izushi Sara Soba restaurant!

    A Luxurious Stay at Ohana, Preserved by the Descendants of the Yanagawa Clan Lord
    ‘Staying at a stately residence run by the descendants of the Yanagawa (柳川) clan lord’—the thought of this dreamlike experience filled me with both excitement and a little apprehension. However, my nerves soon melted away thanks to the friendly and warm hospitality of the staff. The historic building held no trace of intimidating grandiosity; instead, I felt a strange and comforting sense of being welcomed into a relative's home.
