In July 2019, a new sightseeing spot in Osaka that can be enjoyed by beginners, "What is Ukiyo-e?" This time, we will report on the report of Osaka Ukiyo-e Museum, which is still one of the few museums in Kansai that have permanent Ukiyo-e.
Meeting with Ukiyoe is an Ochazuke Bonus Card
What kind of ukiyo-e do you think of? My encounter with Ukiyo-e is the Ukiyo-e card in Nagayaen's “Ochazuke Nori”. I was young enough to understand Ukiyo-e, but I remember that I thought it was interesting because of the various landscapes and people.

At Nagatanien, the production process was carried out by hand until about 50 years ago. It is the beginning that this card was put in place of the check sheet of the confirmation mark of the product. During the period of about 30 years from 1965 to 1997, representative Ukiyo-e such as “Tokaidō Gochusanji” and “Togashi Sanrokukei” and overseas masterpieces were developed as cards. Although it has been suspended due to the passage of time, there has been a growing interest in Japanese culture, and the card encapsulation has been restored for the first time in about 20 years three years ago. There seem to be many people who are pleased with nostalgia.
Rainy weather is OK! Ukiyoe Museum of Art for convenient access
The Ukiyo-e Museum, which I will introduce this time, has opened in Shinsaibashi, Osaka. Shinsaibashi, one of Osaka's most famous shopping districts, is close to the Kashiwa Bridge over the Dotonbori River and the large Glico sign that is visible beyond it. There are old-fashioned shops and fashion shops that are popular with young people.

About 5 minutes walk from Osaka Metro Shinsaibashi Station. Because it is in the arcade, there is no worry of getting wet in the rain. Be careful not to get overwhelmed by the crowds as it is crowded with tourists from overseas. There is an art museum on the 3rd floor of the drugstore building on the first floor, but when you look up, there is a signboard. Go up the stairs and you will arrive at the Osaka Ukiyo-e Museum.

Please note that there is no elevator.
All the works of Hiroshige Utagawa's `` Tokaido Gokisanji '' are released!
This museum was founded by a Ukiyoe collector as a sister building following the Kyoto Ukiyoe Museum of Art. To commemorate the opening, all works of Hiroshige Utagawa's “Tokaido Gojisanji” will be released until November 22.

“I don't think it's unusual to see all the works at once.” I hope that as many people as possible will take a close look at it and know how wonderful it is. " After being in charge of this work, Mr. Tsuji became deeply intimate with Ukiyoe, and was amazed at the level of technology.
Facing the real Nihonbashi, which is not a bonus
Ah. this! I've seen this ukiyoe, Ochazuke Nori bonus card!

The size of the extra card is a little larger than the business card. When I thought the real thing was bigger, I felt it smaller than I expected. Perhaps it is because you are used to posters with large prints of Ukiyo-e. “There are many people who are said to be unexpectedly small,” says Ms. Kaji. “Tokaido Gochusanji” is a masterpiece that was made known to Hiroshige and the world. Tokaido, which starts from Edo Nihonbashi and ends at Sanjo Ohashi in Kyoto, has 53 lodgings and a boom in travel among the commoners. The landscape ukiyo-e seems to have played a role as a guidebook in the Edo period. Many people have seen this Ukiyo-e, which shows the Daimyo procession of attending shifts and a fish seller going out to a hawker, which is the beginning of the journey.
Actually there was one more? Nihonbashi
In fact, there is another Nihonbashi map that is the starting point of Tokaido Gochusan.

“It seems that this Tokaido Gochusan has been selling for a long time, and this figure, which has been lively by increasing the number of people, seems to have been added later,” says Tsuji. Two pieces are displayed side by side, so you can enjoy comparing them. Including this figure, it is a masterpiece that all 56 figures are arranged together. If you look in order, you will feel as if you are traveling by slipping back in time.
Ukiyo-e prints are the result of team play
Ukiyo-e prints are drawn by an artist, based on which an engraver engraves a wood block, and a sushi artist rubs the paper with paint. Finished in this division of labor process. Only painters tend to attract attention, but if the skills of painters, sculptors, and survivors are not gathered together, it will not be a masterpiece. “I feel like I can't believe it ’s actually carved into the fineness of the horse's hair, or to the fineness of it,” says Tsuji. “It ’s the great skill of the craftsman that determines the finish of the work.” To make a single Ukiyo-e print, change the woodblock for each color, and the sushi teacher will rub carefully so that they are all in the same position to complete the Ukiyo-e print. Unevenness was created by “empty sliding” that rubs the wood block without painting, creating an expression that takes advantage of the white color of the paper. There is also an ukiyo-e that uses that technique in “Tokaidō Goseisanji”, and you can see it well by looking closely. The museum also displays Ukiyo-e prints that are finished in increasing colors so that you can understand the production process.
I want people who have never seen it to touch raw ukiyo-e
This is "Tokaido Gokomi Sanjo Shono / Shirarain". In the summer dusk where the black clouds gather, the situation of people rushing along the road in the bad weather comes to life.

The “white rain” of “Shono / Shirarain” means the rain that looks white and the evening. The expression of rain with diagonal lines, which is often seen in comics, seems to have been groundbreaking at that time. Each work has a caption with easy-to-understand information. “I would like to see people who come in contact with Ukiyoe for the first time. If you look closely, you will be surprised and impressed by the high level of technology and subtlety. “I want you to have it,” says Tsuji.
The best part is that you can fully appreciate the monumental ukiyo-e of Hokusai
The Osaka Ukiyo-e Museum has a permanent display of Hokusai's representative works, “Thirty-six Views of Togashi-kei-kaze”.

Hokusai Katsushika “Thirty-six Views of Togashi”
It is said that Hokusai drew the phenomenon of Fuji's late summer, and the majestic view of the red sunrise glowing the red light of Fuji is a special thing that should be seen once a year. There is an owner's feeling that this work is a permanent exhibition. Before opening the museum, when I was visiting a lot of museums, when I wanted to see the work I was looking for, it was because I was sorry that it was lent out to the outside. In a large-scale traveling exhibition held in Osaka, I heard that there were many people around Kuroyama who were not able to see it carefully. If you come here, you will always be able to meet Hokusai's Akafuji.
Souvenir goods are also available!
The Osaka Ukiyo-e Museum has a wide selection of souvenirs. You can buy Ukiyo-e that also holds the Austrian Museum of Applied Art and the Boston Museum of Fine Arts. There is also a reprint of Ukiyo-e, so I'm happy for those who want to see it at home.

This is fun! This is a postcard for Hokusai Manga. Hokusai Manga is said to have been a painting that Hokusai drew freely, but is popularly called “Hokusai Sketch” overseas. It's also a good idea to enjoy comical ukiyo-e as a coloring book and enjoy it during the summer.

There is also a cookie with a Hokusai pattern! The famous “Togashi Sanpikokukei Kanagawa off the coast” is the package design. It looks good as a souvenir for your trip.

You can enjoy twice with Ukiyo-e and Osaka sightseeing
The area around Osaka Ukiyo-e Museum is full of Osaka's Konamon culture, takoyaki and okonomiyaki shops. It is a place where you can enjoy the liveliness and charm of the flashy neon street of Osaka. After watching Ukiyo-e, please enjoy the food culture while watching Kuidore dolls.
