A trip to the National Distinctive Art Museum, this time we will introduce Koji Shinoda Memorial Masuko Reference Center.
An art museum where you can see the "life and work" spread in Mashiko's backyard

Koji Shibata, a ceramic artist who has been recognized as an important intangible cultural property holder (human national treasure), has been a major figure in the folk song movement, and is also a person who has made Mashiko Yaki (Mashikoyaki) available to the world. After graduating from the current Tokyo Institute of Technology, Shibata entered the Kyoto Municipal Ceramics Experiment Station to study, but he also felt that there was a sense of obstruction in Japanese craftsmanship in the mid 20s, so he was a British man Will accompany the return of the potter Bernard Leach and begin making pottery in the UK. He worked as a successful solo exhibition at a gallery in London and returned home three years later. Impressed by the lifestyle she saw in a rural town in England, Ashida wanted to live in the country and was selected as a place of life by Mashiko. The "Koji Kushida Memorial Masuko Reference Museum" opened in 1977 also displays the house at that time. In addition, as the name of the "relevant building", not only his own works, he also has about 2000 collections that he collected and used as reference for his works.
In February 2018, the second "Satoshi Shinji Tobari Revitalization Project" was held, and 85 artists from the neighborhood participated this time.
The museum is spread over the slopes of the mountain. There are 5 exhibition halls on the site, and also display workshops and climbing pots. The house where Shibata lived was an old building of the Taisho period that has been relocated from a nearby farmhouse. Shibata, who was attracted by a building that feels a sense of life, and also has a social character, is said to have searched for a rebuilding or alternative home in a nearby village, negotiated and relocated himself. For Shibata, who collected many things rooted in the land, the house may be one collection.
Building No. 4 with a thatched roof. Exhibited a separate residence of Koji Kuwata, and exhibited collection items such as furniture and dishes.
In the exhibition room, there are many vital works such as living tools used by the indigenous people of Africa and crafts found in the depths of Okinawa. Above all, Native American owls are fragrant and they are popular among visitors.
The lovely appearance is also popular with visitors.
We are currently holding the "Forty Years Anniversary of the Path Followed by Koji Shibata" exhibition. As he says, "I found a way in Kyoto, started in the UK, studied in Okinawa, and grew up in Mashiko", the works of Shibata reflect the atmosphere and techniques of the land that I spent in each era. At the exhibition, you can also see valuable works such as the “Don't Satsukemen” when you were studying pigment goth at the Ceramics Research Center in Kyoto.
An early work that explores the style of an individual while trying and erroring.
Take a leisurely tour of the museum located in Mashiko's backyard, and enjoy a visit to the nearby shrine on your way back.
