The Kyoto Artisan Experience: Create Your Own Kumihimo Braids, Katazome Prints, and Kyo-Karakami Paper Using Authentic Tools

When visiting Kyoto, trying your hand at understanding the techniques behind how crafts are born makes for a wonderful travel memory. We introduce three workshops where you can enjoy an authentic craft experience using the genuine tools and materials employed by artisans.

The Comforting, Mindful Time of Hand-Braiding with Wooden Tools [Showen kumihimo (昇苑くみひも)]

Kyokumihimo (京組紐) is well-known for items like Obi-jime on kimonos (帯締め). You can enjoy a hands-on introduction to the process of hand-braiding silk threads to create a cord.
You will be introduced to a technique called Yatsugumi (八つ組), which involves braiding eight bundles of thread using a square tool known as a Kakudai (角台). By moving the threads wound around wooden bobbins in a regular pattern, the cord is braided together at the centre of the stand. If you lose focus, you might forget how to braid, so a moderate amount of concentration is required.
The sound of the wooden bobbins clacking together and the sensation of the silk threads pulling tight are truly soothing, allowing you to spend an hour lost in a quiet, meditative flow.

Be careful not to get the braiding order wrong…

Left / The finished braided cord can be made into two of the following items in about 15 minutes: a strap, a bag charm, or a bracelet. Right / There is a wonderful joy in finding your rhythm as the pattern comes together! You can choose your favourite threads from six different colours.

So many colours to choose from, you will be spoilt for choice!

Left / Showen kumihimo (昇苑くみひも), which handles everything from thread dyeing to cord braiding and commercialisation. The shop features modern products. Shoken Odamaki (正絹 大田巻) Keyrings, 1,100 yen each. Right / They also offer surprising items like Shoken Temaki Chazutsu (正絹 手巻き茶筒), 4,620 yen each.

Learn the Kyoyuzen Technique of Suribitta from an Active Artisan [Kitamoto sengei (北本染芸)]

A specialist Katazome shop of Kyoyuzen (京友禅) with a history spanning over 100 years. Here, valuable workshops are held where the third-generation head artisan personally teaches authentic Edo period Katazome using his favoured materials and tools.
The process involves various steps, but a rare one is Suribitta (摺り疋田), a type of Katazome. This is a technique that replicates a pattern similar to Kanoko (鹿の子) tie-dyeing. By using three dedicated stencils and rubbing the dye in with a brush, detailed patterns are brought to life.
It is highly recommended for those who wish to take their time and experience the meticulousness of Kyoto craftsmanship.

Deftly sweeping the brush to infuse the fabric with color.

Left / The chosen design is Kakitsubata (燕子花). First, starch is applied to the outline of the design. A vinyl sheet is placed over it, and the areas to be dyed are cut out using a craft knife. The stencil for Suribitta is placed on top, and dye is applied by moving a brush. Right / The stencil has been removed. In the areas where the blue vinyl was cut out in the shape of petals, the purple Suribitta pattern appears!

Applying gold leaf instantly makes it look magnificent.

Left / The areas other than the Suribitta are coloured using a brush. Right / Gold leaf is applied to the starched outline of the design to complete it.

Here is the completed Kakitsubata!

Left / Completed in about 2 hours! Right / The finished fabric is tailored into items such as a Kinpufukusa (金封袱紗) or a Sukiyabukuro (数寄屋袋) and sent to your home.

Left / The brush used for Suribitta is made of deer hair. Right / The third-generation head, Kitamoto Masuhiro. He passionately leads various initiatives to preserve and share the authentic techniques of Edo-period Kyo-Yuzen.

Bringing Kyoto Decor Closer to Home! A Hub Conveying the Charm of Karakami [Kyokarakamino Taikenkobo to Shoppu Karamaru (京からかみの体験工房とショップ 唐丸)]

Opened as a Kyohyogushi (京表具師) during the Meiji era. Now, the manufacturer Maruni (丸二), which has its own Kyokarakami workshop and produces and installs sliding door paper and wallpaper for temples, shrines, tea rooms, and hotels, has created this shop and experience workshop as a place to share its tradition and charm.
Hands on courses, such as making a Goshuincho (御朱印帳), allow you to learn about the history of Karakami while actually using woodblocks crafted over 100 years ago. The process of printing vibrant, auspicious patterns onto Washi (和紙) will fill you with a sense of pure happiness.

Applying paint to the woodblock with a ‘Furui’

Top / A unique feature of Karakami is the use of a tool called a Furui – a circular wooden frame covered with gauze – to apply paint onto the woodblock. Washi paper is placed on top and rubbed with the palm of the hand to transfer the pattern. Bottom Left / The woodblocks themselves are already beautiful. The Hyotan (瓢箪), which is said to bring prosperity to descendants and great fortune. Bottom Right / The finished Karakami can be made into a Goshuincho and taken home.

It would look incredibly stylish decorating a room!

Left / The shop also sells items related to Karakami, such as wall panels and woodblock stamps. It is a delight to visit simply for shopping. Right / The second floor of the building is a workshop (there is also an experience course that includes a workshop tour). Being able to see the artisans’ skills up close is a truly priceless experience.

On the right is a view inside the shop. There are also many foreign tourists.
