The first fireworks display in Tokyo is “Adachi Fireworks”. There are many people every year. In this article, Kimura, who has lived in Adachi City for 20 years, will deliver special information that will enhance your appreciation if you know everything from the history of fireworks in Adachi to recommended spots.

The charm of Adachi's fireworks is so close!

In the summer, various fireworks festivals are held throughout the country. In recent years, fireworks teachers' skills have been increasing, and new fireworks are appearing one after another. Under such circumstances, the appeal of the fireworks at Adachi is not so close. Depending on the location, you can appreciate about 14,000 fireworks right below. If I sit down and look at me, my neck gets stuck ... If you make room with a blue sheet, you can lie down and enjoy the big fireworks that spread out in the sky.

"Adachi Fireworks" has a history of 95 years

What is the beginning of the Adachi fireworks?

The “Adachi Fireworks” is said to have been launched in the Meiji Era to celebrate the completion of Senju Ohashi. The fireworks display was held in earnest about 95 years ago. In commemoration of the opening of Senju-Shinbashi on August 13, 1924, we joined the summer feature of Adachi City under the name “Senju Fireworks Display”.

Senju Shimbashi

Along with the Ryogoku fireworks (current Sumida River Fireworks Festival) depicted in the series “Edo Hundred Views of Famous Edo” by Hiroshige Utagawa, a Ukiyo-e artist from the Edo period, the Senju Fireworks Festival is the center of summer in Shimomachikko. It is said that both adults and children looked forward with their fingers folded as the tournament approached.

However, due to the war, it was canceled in 1939. Although it is revived after the war, fireworks can no longer be launched due to the renovation of the Arakawa River that began in 1959.

About 20 years later, in 1978. 800 fireworks were launched during the inhabitant farewell competition held in August. Over the past 20 years, Adachi's famous “ghost chimneys” and “five-colored cherry blossoms” disappeared, and the people of Adachi were about to give up the revival of fireworks. Fireworks surprises are very popular, and the cool summer competition was more exciting than usual. This event renewed the wish for “Revival of Senju Fireworks”. The enthusiasm of the inhabitants of the ward arrived, and the name was changed to “Adachi Fireworks Festival” on August 11, 1979, the following year.

Without losing the bad weather, finally revived!

It was a resurgence of my wishes, but this “1st Adachi Fireworks Festival” does not proceed smoothly. It was held one week later due to bad weather on the originally scheduled date. On that day, it seemed that it was raining out of season from the evening. Meanwhile, the launch time was increased by 1 hour, and a big firework was launched to blow away the bad weather.

The month after the fireworks display, published in September 1979, “Adachi Hikaru,” says, “The lightning of the thunder storm also flashes into the night sky. The atmosphere of the downtown area was revealed, and the fireworks display and the audience were united, and the audience was intoxicated with fireworks for a while at a midsummer night's banquet. " You can see that people were crazy about the beauty of fireworks even in bad weather.

State of the 1st Adachi Fireworks Festival

Because of the long period of discontinuation, the Adachi fireworks caught people's hearts. Since then, it has been held every year as “Pride of Adachi” and will celebrate the 41st in 2019.

Adachi fireworks with a strong image of bad weather such as strong winds and rain. However, knowing such a history not only regrets that the fireworks display is rainy, but also those who have been waiting for years to come back to see the fireworks in the rain. If you are impressed, you can have a different view.

Aside knowledge: Hanashi of Senju Ohashi and Senju Shimbashi

Senju Bridge

The fireworks display started with the completion of Senju Ohashi and the opening of Senju Shinbashi. “Senju Ohashi” and “Senju Shinbashi” are a little confusing.

Senju Ohashi Bridge was the first bridge over the Sumida River. The history is unexpectedly long, and it is said that Ieyasu Tokugawa was bridged when he moved to Edo. I survived the 300 years of the Edo period until it was washed away by the flood caused by the typhoon in 1908.

It's amazing that there was such a famous bridge in Adachi City. Later, it was rebridged to its current position in the Meiji Year. This is said to be the origin of the Adachi fireworks (there are various theories).

On the other hand, Senju Shinbashi is the first railway bridge built on the “Arakawa Floodway” that was built to prevent the flooding of the Arakawa River.

Overcoming the Great Kanto Earthquake that occurred in 1923, it was opened in 1924. This is the beginning of the Senju Fireworks Festival (Adachi Fireworks).

The date and time: Saturday, July 20, 2019, 19: 30-20: 30 * In case of stormy weather, it will be canceled Venue: Arakawa Riverbed (between Tokyo Metro Chiyoda Line Iron Bridge and Nishiarai Bridge)
Launch location: Senju side (Junan)

It will be held on May 30th in 2020

2020 when the Tokyo Olympics will be held. If it is held on the third Saturday as usual, it will be just before the opening ceremony of the Olympics. To avoid confusion, Adachi's fireworks have been changed to May 30th (Saturday) only in 2020! The fireworks in May are also fresh and fun!

What are the recommended spots?

By the way, here are some recommended & hidden spots that you care about.

◆ Recommended spots
Recommended is the riverbed on the Kitasenju side. Since this is the main venue, it is necessary to make a place, but it is the best spot where you can see the fireworks spreading in the sky. You can also see the special fireworks such as “Niyagara Falls”, which is the famous fireworks of Adachi. (* Please note that there are many restricted areas in this area)

It is easy to understand if you aim for “Nishiarai Bridge”

◆ Rather crowded secret spots
If you are lucky, you can sit down without taking a place at Nishiarai side riverbed and Rainbow Square. "Nishiarai side riverbed" is the opposite side of Nishiarai Bridge from the recommended spot "Kitasenju side riverbed". Because the road is wide, you can enjoy it relatively relaxedly, without getting angry. The fireworks will be in front of you as you will be directly in front of the main venue!

On the other hand, “Niji no Hiroba” is a few minutes walk from the main venue toward Senju-Shimbashi. Fireworks such as Niagara Falls are difficult to see on the bridge, but it is recommended because the fireworks can be seen clearly.

◆ Congestion avoidance spot
Want to enjoy leisurely, and want to taste a little fireworks on your way home from work. The area around Ogi Ohashi is recommended for such people. Because you are away from the launch site, you don't have to worry about taking the place. The stall seems to have a store near here, so you can relax and enjoy beer, snacks and fireworks.

Experience shows that there are many days of fireworks in Adachi, so when placing a place, please fix the vinyl sheet firmly with a weight! (* Placement from the previous day is prohibited)

Tipsy Column: The recommended bar after the fireworks is here!

After the fireworks are over, many people come home all at once, so Kitasenju, the main nearest station, is particularly crowded. You can't enjoy the reverberation of fireworks if you go back to the waves of people, even though they're rare. In this tipsy column, we will introduce recommended izakayas to stop by after the fireworks at Adachi.

◆ Tsumaki

Tsukimi, a yakiya with a red lantern as a landmark, is a popular restaurant full of seats every day. The inside of the shop is like a long table and round chairs, almost like a Showa pub, but it opened in 2014 and is a relatively new shop.

Kushiyaki is reasonable at almost 100 yen. The standard menu includes potato salad, soup rolls, and rebateki. Recommended is a stew stew that is rare in an izakaya

Draft beer chilled in the kinkin, hoppies with increasing naka, and an exquisite proportion of lemon sour. “Tsukiki” has excellent drinks.

Why don't you immerse yourself in the afterglow of a firework while drinking a tailpaste until some time is open to the public?
(Because it is expected to be crowded on the day of fireworks, please contact the store in advance!)
