Uonuma (魚沼) City, Niigata (新潟) Prefecture. Few people know that in a town nestled in the mountains of the famous Hakkaisan (八海山), there once existed a master carver of almost divine skill. His name was Ishikawa Uncho (石川雲蝶). He was a carver and pagoda carpenter who lived from the end of the Edo period to the Meiji era.
